Learning about tiger
Tiger is found on earth for more than 2
millions years ago. In the earliest era,
tiger has long fang which is called smilodon.
Smilodon is the origin of various kinds
of tiger today. They are put into 4 categories.
1.1 Panthera: Big size tiger that roar,
such as lion, tiger, leopard and jaguar.
1.2 Felis: Small size tiger, such as cat,
leopard cat, jungle cat.
1.3 Neofelis: Medium size tiger that cannot
roar, and there is only one kind, which
is clouded leopard.
1.4 Arsinarnics: Species that cannot keep
its claw, and the only species is cheetah,
which is the fastest animal on earth.
Tiger
Majority of tigers has similar size and
hair color. There are some differences that
can be categorized into 8 kinds of subspecies.
(IUCN, 1994)
1. Bali tiger * (Panthera tigris balica)
2. Caspian tiger * (Panthera tigris virgata)
3. Indo-Chinese tiger (Panthera tigris corbetti)
4. Javan tiger * (Panthera tigris sondaica)
5. Royal Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris tigris)
6. Siberian tiger (Panthera tigris altaica)
7. South China tiger (Panthera tigris amoyensis)
8. Sumatran tiger (Panthera tigris sumatrae)
There are 8 species of tiger, but 3 species
have extinct, they are Bali tiger, Caspian
tiger and Javan tiger. These tigers are
distinguished by size, color and body pattern.
The biggest one is Sumatran tiger and the
smallest one is Bali tiger. Tigers that
live in the north have lighter hair color
than those in the south. For example, Siberian
tiger has the lightest hair color, while
Bali tiger has the darkest color.
Each subspecies has different stripe and
pattern. For example, South China tiger
has fewest stripes, while Siberian tiger
and Indo-Chinese tiger have the most stripes.
Bali tiger, Javan tiger and Sumatran tiger
live on island and have the most stripes.
Furthermore, some species of tigers have
longer hair with different pattern on the
body and head size.

Javan tiger have been extinct. Tigers found
in Thailand are Indo-Chinese tiger.
